NEW NATIVE PRAIRIE AREA BEING ESTABLISHED ALONG MARINERS TRAIL

NEW NATIVE PRAIRIE AREA

The City of Two Rivers is partnering with Woodland Dunes Nature Center and Glacierland Resource Conservation & Development Council, Inc. to restore native prairie to the City-owned wayside park located along STH 42 at Lake Michigan, just north of the offices of the Chamber of Manitowoc County.

With grant funding secured from US Fish and Wildlife Service, Fund for Lake Michigan and Sustain Our Great Lakes, a total of 0.71 acres will be converted from mowed lawn to native prairie.

Site preparations has begun, with planting of native species planned for  Spring 2023.   Grant funding will provide several years of oversight and management to ensure successful native vegetation establishment.

Native prairies take many years to establish and provide a host of ecological benefits. Native prairies contain deep rooted perennial vegetation, which improves infiltration and reduces runoff, thereby improving water quality in Lake Michigan. They contain a variety of native species, which are aesthetically pleasing and important food and nectar sources for migrating birds and pollinators.

Watch for  opportunities to participate in the restoration efforts, next Spring.
