Sculpture placed with direction of Czech creator

Sculptor Vaclav Fiala in Two Rivers Central Park East Aug. 8, 2023.

Renowned artist Vaclav Fiala and his family were in Two Rivers last week to oversee the installation of Fiala's Friendship Table in Central Park East.

The piece is a tribute to the ties between the American and Czech people. It also recognizes the legacy of Lt. Col. Matt Konop of Two Rivers, the grandson of Czech immigrants who led the U.S. Army unit into his ancestral hometown of Domazlice to liberate it from German occupiers in 1945.

Friendship Table is a companion piece to another monument by Fiala which was dedicated in 2021 in Domazlice, now our Sister City.

Patrick Dewane, grandson of Konop, and supporters of the Sister Cities initiative made this project possible. The town of Domazlice, Czechia, also made a generous donation to this project.
